Midlife crises is real! At what age it happens is different for everyone. For me, it was when 50 started to fast approach. The ‘crises’ for me was that I had just accepted turning 40 and now that decade was nearly over with another one just around the corner. Where had my 40s gone? There was some panic setting in as I didn’t want to be living a life that could have with regrets.
Midlife is your time to take stock and really decide what matters most for you. You will never be this young again. Who are you really if you are not being a parent, working, or being a spouse, to name but a few of the many roles you could be in.
Some of these roles may no longer be as they have been for decades. You have arrived at a crossroads and it can feel like you are now forced to evaluate your life. Hopefully, it feels like an opportunity for you to do some things you have always wanted but never had the opportunity before. It is a great time to do what is right for you.
In some ways, midlife can mirror the teenage years when we began to explore who we were and what we wanted to do. Who you have been over the past few decades may now be changing again.
Here is your chance to find your passion. What do you love? If it’s not clear yet then make soul searching a new habit and start looking for what truly makes you happy. What has made you happy in the past? The best way to do this is to write down your thoughts. Be willing to experiment in order to find what works best for you. The important thing is to take action.
Are fears holding you back? What is it you fear? What is your biggest fear? What is the worst that can happen? What will happen if you do nothing?
What do you want to do more of and less of in your life now? Start slowly adding more of your ‘more’ and doing less of your ‘less’.
Midlife is a time of new beginnings. It’s an opportunity to take stock of your life and where you want it to go from here – whether that be more time with family or taking the first step in starting a new business, don’t let fear hold you back. Life doesn’t wait for anyone; what will the next chapter of your life look like?
